Zambia’s ATI Law Operationalised

Cornelius Mweetwa | Minister of Information and Media (MIM)

The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Information and Media (MIM), has published Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 35 of 2024 to implement the Access to Information (ATI) Law, which was passed in December 2023.

In May this year, MIM Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana informed the nation that the Access to Information (ATI) law would come into effect in June 2024.

The ATI Law’s implementation is a significant step towards promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in Zambia, and it demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental right to information, which is required for the realisation of other human rights and freedoms.

With the ATI Law now in effect, citizens are empowered to access vital information on matters of public interest, fostering an environment where informed decision-making and civic participation are not only encouraged but also implemented.

Stakeholders have long urged the passage and implementation of an ATI law as a critical component of democracy and sustainable development.

It will be fascinating to observe how the ATI Law evolves in the next few years, even as we anticipate regulations that will guide how to go about requesting public information, including the forms to use and so on.
